BACKGROUND

The major part of the population of Sanghar is living in the villages; most of the villages are facing lack of basic facilities like clean water for drinking, electricity, roads, transportation, sanitation, basic health education and income generation facilities. Major part of the population is either land less tenants or small farmers. The income level of local village people is very low and they are facing major problems of their remote rural area.

As the communities of this area concern to the tenants and peasants, so the woman of this area works hard in the fields beside their family male members. She awakes early in the morning and after necessary home business she spends her time in the fields, sowing, watering, harvesting whole day. Women face this tough life with great courage. Women of this area are ready to participate in such healthy activities because they are well motivated for the cause.

2.1           MAJOR PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED IN THE AREA

§                     About 70% of the population in the project area is below the poverty line.

§                    Very low female literacy ratio that is less than 15% in urban areas and 5% in rural areas.

§                     A woman in the area has no individual entity, she is just a chattel. She can be killed by her own son, husband or brother, or her in-laws, with complete impunity and merely on the suspicion of being a Kari . She can be killed in cold blood if she declines, which she seldom does, to marry a person chosen by her parents.

§                     Women of the villages are considered as a free and bounded labour in the villages. In rural areas, villagers usually work in agriculture fields and get very meager return. Thus, they are not getting health and civil facilities in their area.

§                     It has been observed that there is a lack of knowledge, awareness and training about program planning for using local and natural resources properly.

§                     The environmental distress has ruined the natural resources of production and income in the area. Sanghar is an agricultural district. 75% of its population concern to its agricultural and cattle rearing economy, also some fishing and wild life products (such as meat, milk, ghee, leather, wild fruits etc.) depend on better environmental phenomenon. Research cell of SHWO has studied and surveyed the disaster due to the pollution in the area. The non-scientific and unlimited use of pesticides, cutting of trees, degradation of soil through water logging are the facts that have created more problems for survival.
